Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
She' been down over a year because of what i thought was only a blown head gasket. It turns out that not only was the head gasket gone, but the turbo was dead and the balance shaft belt was shredding itself to pieces. Had a driven it any longer, the motor would have been killed. Plus the car had always grinded second since i bought it over almost four years ago. So she sat as i saved money and pieced togeather eeverything i needed to make her run better than the day she was built. The only things done before i stopped driving her were:
ebay 16g turbo ( dont ever waste your money on one )
walboro 255
2.5 inch exhaust
boost controller
boost gauge
af gauge
lowering springs
and kyb adjusstable struts
and like i said i quit driving it so i could buy everything to make her better than right:
brand new head ( with a valve job )
cometic 3 layer head gasket
cometic timing belt and tensioner
oem oil pump
oem water pump
new pulleys
arp head studs
oil catch
fmic
all new gaskets
new e3 16g turbo
stainless manifold
rebuilt transmission
oem throw out bearing and chryo treated fork
act 2100 clutch
act 2600 pressure plate
act streetlite flywheel
misimoto radiator
slim fan
i feel like im forgetting something.... Hmm oh well. Anyways as of right now the motor and transmission are out of the car. The old head is off and the tranny is seperated. Old turbo is off and sitting to the side, i haven't decided if im going to try and rebuild it or not to have as a spare. Oh i know what i forgot:
balance shaft elimination kit from STM
anyways, new oil and water pumps are on. Balance shafts have been eliminated, new pulleys are on. Thats as far as i've gotten right now. With only two days off a week i dont get a lot of time to work on the car. But she ahould be done in maybe 2 weeks. I'll have pictures up soon
i also went ahead and got rid of my power steering

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
sounds fun, I'm suprised you were even able to drive the car with no head gasket, sure it was just blowing coolant and smoke and shit everywhere.
Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
yeah man she was smokin like a champ! got a good bit done tonight. ARP head studs are in, head is sitting on the block, but i have to go tomorrow to find a deep well 15mm 12 point socket... that sounds ridiculous. damn you ARP for making things difficult.... anyways i'll have a bunch of pics posted in the morning, i just cant find the cable for my camera. happy building! glad i got some stuff done. mad props to tsiguyawd (drew) he's always been a great guide and has been helping me the whole way. oh, and i replaced my driver side mirror, which fell off while i came to a stop a bit back... shattered into a million pieces.

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
so i finally had time to finish the timing... and low and behold something went wrong. took a close look at the crank pulley and it wasn't seated right. took a closer look and it has a crack in it. so i had to take the timing belt off, close the tensioner, and now im looking for a new crank pulley or used one in good shape. im just glad i caught it now instead of when i cranked the motor up and it exploded on me. bad news bears....

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
So, haven't posted on my build in a while, so I figured it was time to let you guys know what's going on. Finally got my new crank pulley and put it on, but had a stroke of bad luck this past weekend. Some one broke into my personal shop and stole ALL of my tools, mishimoto radiator, front mount, six rims with tires, my welder, 2 JL audio subs, Memphis d class amp, and a tial bov. I reported it to the cops, but even they said they probably wouldn't find my stuff.... So I guess now I have to rebuild my tool collection, find me another radiator and fmic, then I'm going to find another shop. Huge set back, but I've got to keep moving forward.

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
Yeah, there's a lock on the iside of the bay door now. And I managed to get a few new tools, but not near enough. Also I'm still trying to find a new radiator ( used actually ) and intercooler. But all I have to do as far as work goes is get the timing right, bolt up the new clutch setup, bolt the tranny back on, and stick the motor back in the car. I'll worry about the front mount and radiator after all that is done.

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
My last post was a little false, I forgot about a few other things I had to do before putting the motor back in. So last night I went to my shop, used what few tools I've managed to get so far, and bolted up the intake and exhaust manifolds, turbo and u2 housing, cam angle sensor, thermostat housing, throttle body, oil pan, and water and crank pulleys. Tomorrow I'm going to get the alternator on there and do my clutch set up. After that it's on to the tranny and dropping the whole thing in. I'm so excited, she's so close to running again. I still don't have a radiator or fmic, but I'll get em as soon as the motor is in and everything is wired up.

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
Last night me and tsiguyawd worked on my talon. The clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate are mounted, and the tranny is now bolted up and everything is hanging from the engine crane, just begging to go in. Then I started looking for my transfer case, the last thing I had to bolt on before I dropped everything in... apparently it was stolen with all of my other stuff when my shop was broken into. So now I'm trying to find another one. If I ever find out who did this, lots of bad things are going to happen to them....

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
Talked to a buddy in New York who has a bunch of parts cars and asked if he has a spare transfer case layin around. I was in luck, he had one for a 1g! Sent him the money today and should have it by the beginning of the week :d

Lol yeah I know. Like I was dating on the feedback thread, my computer crashed so all I have right now is my iPhone. I'll see what I can do. Btw my transfer case finally came in yesterday just waiting on my bolts from Mitsubishi, and then this motor will be ready to go back in

Re: Resurrecting my 1990 talon awd
My motor has been in for about a week and a half now. Transfer case and drift shaft are hooked up, my new radiator is in... Again ( I bought another mishimoto ti replace the stolen one, my I intercooler is mounted and I'm trying to figure out a way to run my fog lights with it. I've never seen it done before. I'm also waiting on my new upper intercooler pipe, mine was garbage so I decided to go ahead and replace it. Also I just got my 2g maf. I'm waiting on an axle too. So far, I've bought two axles from two different places and neither have been right. I hate you advanced auto and napa. So just for reference, if you have to buy front axles, don't go to either of those places, they're dumb and have NO IDEA what they're doing. Anyways, I'm going to try and get some pics up soon, I'm fixing my pc this week

What's new? I tried to get a rubber vacuum tee at Advanced stood there for 15 minutes while he tried to find it! I went to O'reillys had it in about 30 seconds.
